Current work includes research on transient ischaemic attack, stroke, diabetes, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and hypertension

Research Interests and Projects

  • Optimising primary care uptake of statins and antihypertensives in patients with cerebrovascular disease through use of a polypill. Stroke Association/British Heart Foundation Programme Grant, £1m (Polypill for Secondary Prevention of Stroke)
  • Evaluating whether primary care physicians should initiate secondary preventative measures in transient ischaemic attack, NIHR RfPB £250k (Role of GP in Initiation of Treatment for TIA, RAPID TIA, including qualitative evaluation)
  • Stroke care after discharge from hospital: developing primary care services
  • Evaluating factors conveying resilience and adaptive coping in patients disabled by stroke, and examining key aspects that determine sense of well-being and what interventions may lead to benefit (Wellbeing and Self-Rated Health in People with Stroke)
  • Studying whether peer support, delivered as a group or individual intervention, can enable people with diabetes and improve their health (Diabetes Peer Support Study, RAPSID)
  • NIHR Stroke Prevention Program investigating the potential role of a polypill in primary prevention in the UK; intensity of blood pressure lowering after stroke; and potential role of self-management of blood pressure in people with stroke and other high risk condition, NIHR programme grant, £2m
