Cardiovascular Group

The Cardiovascular Group is headed by Professor Jonathan Mant. Its work spans the prevention, diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease in community settings. Current work includes research on transient ischaemic attack, stroke, diabetes, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and hypertension

A full list of staff is available here.

Research Interests and Projects

  • Optimising primary care uptake of statins and antihypertensives in patients with cerebrovascular disease through use of a polypill. Stroke Association/British Heart Foundation Programme Grant, £1m (Polypill for Secondary Prevention of Stroke)
  • Evaluating whether primary care physicians should initiate secondary preventative measures in transient ischaemic attack, NIHR RfPB £250k (Role of GP in Initiation of Treatment for TIA, RAPID TIA, including qualitative evaluation)
  • Stroke care after discharge from hospital: developing primary care services
  • Evaluating factors conveying resilience and adaptive coping in patients disabled by stroke, and examining key aspects that determine sense of well-being and what interventions may lead to benefit (Wellbeing and Self-Rated Health in People with Stroke)
  • Studying whether peer support, delivered as a group or individual intervention, can enable people with diabetes and improve their health (Diabetes Peer Support Study, RAPSID)
  • NIHR Stroke Prevention Program investigating the potential role of a polypill in primary prevention in the UK; intensity of blood pressure lowering after stroke; and potential role of self-management of blood pressure in people with stroke and other high risk condition, NIHR programme grant, £2m
