| Title: | Investigation of student attitudes towards death, and caring for the dying |
| Principal research question: | This study seeks to examine how medical students’ and junior doctors’ attitudes towards end of life care develop. |
| Background: | The aims of the study are to investigate the range of attitudes among first year pre-clinical medical students concerning their role in caring for patients at the end of life, and how these attitudes are influenced by a) their experiences prior to and outside the course and b) their experiences during the course |
| Methodology description: | This is a longitudinal qualitative study in which in-depth interviews have been conducted with 17 Year 1 pre-clinical students. The same students will be interviewed in subsequent years. |
| Sample group description: | Sample of students to be approached for inclusion in the study was based on a) differing experience of close personal loss, b) score on Templar Death Anxiety Scale and c) first language. |
