RAPID-TIA (Qualitative Pilot Study)

Title: Rapid Primary care Initiation of Drug treatment for TIA (RAPID-TIA) - a qualitative prelude to a pilot randomised controlled trial
Principal research question: The purposes of this research include:

1. To establish a qualitative understanding of the impact and meaning of a suspected diagnosis of transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and of the experiences of both patients and medical professionals along the pathway from GP consultation to TIA clinic referral and attendance.

2. To ascertain patients', GPs' and TIA clinic staff's views on current practice, the management of suspected TIA and its final diagnosis.

3. To discover patient, GP and TIA clinic staff attitudes towards GP initiation of therapy and how consent should be obtained.
Methodology description: Semi-structured interviews
Sample group description: Three groups will be interviewed
1. Patients who have been referred to a TIA clinic
2. Clinical and administrative staff in TIA clinics
3. General practitioners
Outcome measure description: This study will achieve a broad qualitative understanding as well as exploring specific issues of feasibility, initiation of therapy and consent which will be directly applicable to a future randomised controlled trial.
