Combined Consultant Job Planning and Appraisal
The following information is provided by the Medical Director’s Office of the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Addenbrooke’s Hospital).
Introduction
Following feedback from the Divisional Directors as from this year appraisal and job planning will be combined and will take place between 1 January and 31 March each year. Each Divisional Director will determine whether Job Planning meeting and Appraisal should be undertaken via two separate meetings, combined into one meeting and which, if any, aspects should be devolved to Clinical Directors or others.
As you are aware, each annual job plan and the objective setting aspects of the appraisal are prospective agreements that set out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. You and your Divisional Director are required to have agreed your job plan and appraisal and ensure that they are submitted to the Medical Directors Office for final sign-off by 31 March 2011.
Job Planning
Prior to your job planning appointment please complete a draft job plan review form to be taken to the meeting. After discussion, the provisional form will be sent to the Medical Director’s Office for the Trust’s Job Planning Review Committee to sign-off.
Appraisal
Prior to your appraisal update your portfolio forms (1-3) from the previous year; using new forms if necessary (see information below); complete Form 4 and the Summary Form during the interview, these should be forwarded to the Divisional Director / Academic Head, if they are not the individuals who have conducted your appraisal and they should then forward the Summary form to the Medical Director, and return a signed copy to you.
- Planning for GMC Revalidation
You will be aware of changes that are to be introduced by the GMC. Annual appraisal will continue to be one of the key elements to support revalidation based on the module derived from Good Medical Practice. It is anticipated that it will become a common requirement to review metrics such as performance measures against national targets, outcomes, complications and benchmarking data as well as patient reported outcome measures, all of which will be required to be signed off by the employer. You may wish to keep your own records of outcome measures to inform the process in the years ahead.
- 360-degree appraisal
All consultants will be required to be the subject of at least one 360° appraisal in each 5-year revalidation cycle. This will continue to be rolled out to all consultants throughout 2011. For those consultants for whom this process has been completed prior to their appraisal, the results should form part of the discussion. For all other consultants the appraisal should follow the usual format.
