doctor carlo acerini

Biography

I qualified in Pharmacology (BSc Hons - 1984) and in Medicine (MBChB - 1988) from the University of Dundee, Scotland.  After postgraduate training in

the West of Scotland, I specialized in paediatric endocrinology & diabetes as a clinical research fellow and then as clinical lecturer at the

Universities of Oxford and Cambridge respectively.

I am currently a University Senior Lecturer and a Honorary Consultant Paediatrician (Endocrinology & Diabetes) at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge (appointed 2000).

Research

I am active in clinical research in the areas of paediatric and adolescent diabetes and endocrinology.

My main area of diabetes related research include studies into the pathophysiology of insulin resistance in children and adolescents with Type 1 and the development of novel therapeutic approaches to improve glycaemic control in patients with diabetes.

My paediatric endocrine research includes studies related to neuroendocrine consequences of acquired brain injury, including the epidemiology and natural history of traumatic brain injury induced hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction.

I am also one of the principle investigators co-ordinating the Cambridge Baby Growth Study (est. 2001), which is a prospective, longitudinal study designed to assess the impact of genetic factors and the role of the maternal in-utero environment (including exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals) on pre / postnatal growth and reproductive health.

I also have a interest in the area of applied GH therapy research

Other research roles:

Associate Director of the Addenbrooke’s Clinical Research Centre

Clinical Lead for the UK Medicines for Children Research Network for the West Anglia CLRN area.

Teaching

I am Attachment Director for the MB Stage 2 (Clinical) Growth and Development (Paediatrics) course.

I am a Bye Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge, and supervise undergraduate students in Human Reproduction (MVST part 1B) course.
