Professor Ieuan Hughes
Professor Hughes has an interest in normal and abnormal
sex differentiation in humans. His studies involve hormonal control of
gene transcription by androgens in relation to XY sex reversal
syndromes.
The Cambridge Intersex Database now has clinical, biochemical,
histological and molecular information on more than 1500 intersex cases
referred for diagnostic investigations. The database is focussed on
syndromes of androgen insensitivity (complete and partial) but also has
information relating to androgen biosynthetic defects, gonadal
dysgenesis, true hermaphroditism and specific eponymous syndromes.
Studies on hypospadias, the commonest congenital malformation in males,
are also undertaken. These include epidemiological, biochemical and
genetic studies on the putative role of endocrine disruptors
on male reproductive disorders. Clinical research is undertaken on
congenital adrenal hyperplasia and a range of endocrine disorders of
childhood.
Professor Hughes is currently Chair of the Committee on
Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment.
