About Alasdair Coles
I came to Cambridge as a trainee neurologist in 1994 and have not left! I want to find new ways to treat people with multiple sclerosis. I was one of a team who brought a drug called alemtuzumab (or “Campath”) though clinical trials to getting licensed in 2004. Now I have changed focus to remyelinating treatments. Since 2024, I have been Head of Department of Clinical Neurosciences, which is a privilege and pleasure.
Project/study information
There are many licensed treatments of multiple sclerosis, all of which suppress inflammation in the brain and prevent people having further attacks. What is now needed are drugs to repair the damage that has already been done. So we do trials of drugs designed to promote remyelination.
Recruitment of PhD / Post doctoral students
We welcome PhD students, doctors, nurses and postdocs to join our team analysing remyelination in people with multiple sclerosis across the age span, using tests of vision and MR imaging.
