Dear student,
We are currently in the process of developing individual Year 5 schedules (2020/21 academic year). The schedules have to take into account a range of factors, some of which are not know until late in the Easter term. However, there are some principles that we will be working to in order to fix the schedules and these are outlined below. Hopefully this information will help you with planning for accommodation purposes and your other commitments for year 5.
- We will aim for you to stay on the same Rotation you are currently in for Year 4. Please see your current Year 4 2019-20- Year 4 and Year 5 Year 5 20-21 timetable for reference. If, for example, you are currently in Year 4 Block C your last block will be Emergency Care/GP, therefore your first block in Year 5 will be GP/Specialist Medicine.
- Year 5 has two blocks where you select your own core experiences. These are the Specialist Surgery and Specialist Medicine blocks and could be Cambridge or regionally based.
Specialist Surgery includes 2 weeks in Oncology (in Cambridge) and 4 weeks’ Student selected placement (SSP) from a list of options all based in Addenbrookes, Papworth or Regional Hospitals. You can find more information on MedEd here: Specialist Surgery
Specialist Medicine includes 1 week at Papworth (located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus), 1 week in Infectious Diseases and 4 weeks Student selected placement (SSP) from a list of options. For more details of these blocks see MedEd on the link below.
Specialist Medicine this link is to the current Year 5 pages, changes are likely to be made to some SSP options for next year.
The other 2 Year 5 blocks are Maternal & Child Health and Neurosciences and Mental Health. There are some Year 5 placements in Addenbrookes, Fulbourn or Ida Darwin. Priority for Cambridge placements will be given to students who did not have Addenbrookes placements in Medicine or Emergency Care in Year 4.
Maternal & Child Health is an 8 week placement in one location. You can find more information on MedEd here: Maternal and Child Health
Neurosciences and Mental Health is 4 weeks of psychiatry (non-Addenbrookes based, exact locations still to be confirmed) and 2 weeks neurosciences (Addenbrookes based). You can find more information on MedEd here: Neurosciences and Mental Health
Your allocated hub is likely to change in Year 5, we aim for rotations to move from North to East, East to South and South to North. Please note that mental health placements are not always in the same location as the regional hospitals.
Hospital hubs:
Northern hub hospitals: Peterborough, Kings Lynn, Hinchingbrooke
Northern hub mental health: Peterborough, St Andrews Northampton or Essex
Eastern hub hospitals: Ipswich, West Suffolk
Eastern hub mental health: West Suffolk, St Andrews Northampton or Essex
Southern hub: Bedford, Lister (Stevenage)
Southern hub mental health: Luton, Hertfordshire (Various locations, St Andrews Northampton or Essex
Please complete the form below by March 18th providing any important information, such as a request relating to a health or significant welfare issue, that you would like to be taken in to consideration in relation to your placements next year. Please be aware we cannot prioritise your request unless it is approved as essential by the Sub-Dean for Welfare.
We will also at this point be asking you if you are a car user and if you are willing to give lifts to others. We will use this information to ensure an equal distribution of car users across all placements where possible.
