This is an annual process.
Closing date for applications: Friday, 16 February 2018
EVEN IF YOUR APPLICATION WAS SUCCESSFUL LAST YEAR, YOU NEED TO REAPPLY THIS YEAR!
If the details of your teaching submitted in the previous round are still correct, please simply email FacultySec@medschl.cam.ac.uk to advise of this.
If your teaching activities have changed, a new application for recognition of time will be required. Please find a link to the application form to the right of this window.
Criteria for Application
Who can apply? This application relates to NHS consultants employed by the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUHT), and not to those on Academic/University contracts holding established University positions, where teaching is already part of the role (even if they hold an Honorary Consultant contract with CUHT).
For what teaching duties can application be made? Application requires delivery of undergraduate teaching over and above that which would normally be expected within a teaching hospital, and therefore beyond what would be encompassed within the standard 0.5 SPA allocation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Supervising SSC students may form part of this additional activity if it happens with regularity, as may regular small group teaching (e.g. for professionalism, radiology or in other areas).
How does this relate to lead roles involved in the organisation as well as the delivery of teaching? Specialty or theme leads who are not University Teaching Officers should apply through this route.
If you are unsure whether to make an application, please discuss with your Specialty Lead teacher in the first instance.
This application feeds into the job planning process within Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. A Clinical School Panel meets annually in February to review all applications and make recommendations to the Trust where additional PAs could be recognised within an individual’s job plan over and above the ‘standard’ 0.5SPAs for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
The Recognition of Time Process
The Clinical School can only recommend recognition of time, and this does not, therefore, constitute approval of additional payment. If the Panel recommends that additional teaching time is recognised within an individual’s job plan, the individual would need to approach their Specialty Lead / Clinical Director to discuss how that additional recognition might be implemented given the details of their own contract. The Clinical School has no input into this discussion. If an additional payment is agreed, this would be made through the Trust payroll and there would be no need to claim this from the Clinical School direct.
As job plans are reviewed annually, verification is required on an annual basis of the fact that the details of teaching submitted in a previous round are still correct. If teaching activities have changed, a new application for recognition of time will be required. Individuals’ teaching will be reviewed regularly through the Trust’s appraisal processes, but also, for lead roles (for example, Specialty Leads) via the Clinical School.
