The titles of Affiliated Assistant Professor, Affiliated Associate Professor, and Affiliated Professor, are awarded via one of three routes, namely ‘Predominantly teaching’, ‘Predominantly research’, or ‘Impact’. The eligibility criteria for the ‘Impact’ route is detailed below.
Affiliated Assistant Professor – Impact
Applications for the award of title of Affiliated Assistant Professor through the ‘Impact’ route, will be considered with regard to the following criterion:
Consistently makes a sizeable contribution to the University with corresponding impact on the University’s ability to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence. Actively supports the University’s core values, promotes collaboration, and engenders a culture of mutual respect.
The ‘Impact’ application route for affiliated titles is likely to apply to a very small number of applicants overall, and is designed to be able to recognise important contributions from: those whose work evenly spans both teaching and research; and/or those whose contributions facilitate, underpin, or otherwise play a key facilitating role for the University’s teaching, research, and/or strategic collaborations and partnerships. This could include contributions to: fitness to practice procedures; student welfare; academic/clinical IT or technology infrastructure or governance; and education or research leadership/management contributions.
With reference to the criterion above, individuals will be expected to be making a sizeable contribution. Those applying on the basis of contributions which evenly span both teaching and research, are advised to look at the criteria and indicators of excellence for Affiliated Assistant Professor (Predominantly teaching) and Affiliated Assistant Professor (Predominantly research), and ensure that they summarise the evidence for their application being at the Affiliated Assistant Professor level. For those applying on the basis of other kinds of contributions, no specific indicators of excellence are being given, because it is expected that these roles will be both specialist and diverse, making generic indicators unhelpful. Applications should indicate how individuals’ contributions meet the criterion above.
Please note that this is not an application route for all individuals who carry out both teaching and research, as the School recognises that the majority of applicants for affiliated titles will have some involvement in both. The School expects applicants to consider, in liaison with the relevant Head of Department, and specialty lead/course director where relevant, which route – either ‘Predominantly teaching’ or ‘Predominantly research’ – would be more appropriate. Guidance can also be sought from the Secretary of the Faculty Board. The ‘Impact’ route will be appropriate only for a handful of individuals who either make a sizeable contribution to the University in important ways other than direct teaching or research, or who contribute evenly across both teaching and research. In the latter case, whilst the quantity of contribution in each domain might be less, the quality of contribution is expected to meet the criteria for Affiliated Assistant Professor, across both domains.
Affiliated Associate Professor – Impact
Applications for the award of title of Affiliated Associate Professor through the ‘Impact’ route, will be considered with regard to the following criterion:
Consistently makes a significant contribution to the University with corresponding impact on the University’s ability to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence.
