The titles of Affiliated Assistant Professor, Affiliated Associate Professor, and Affiliated Professor, are awarded via one of three routes, namely ‘Predominantly teaching’, ‘Predominantly research’, or ‘Impact’. The eligibility criteria for the ‘Predominantly teaching’ route is detailed below.
Affiliated Assistant Professor – Predominantly Teaching
Applications for the award of title of Affiliated Assistant Professor through the ‘Predominantly teaching’ route, will be considered with regard to the following criteria:
Delivery of excellent research-informed and intellectually challenging teaching (Criterion1)
Contribution to curriculum development and enhancement (Criterion 2) Scholarship in the discipline and/or related to the development of good practice in teaching and learning (Criterion 3)
With reference to these criteria, individuals will be expected to be making a sizeable contribution to one or more of the teaching programmes within the School.
Some possible indicators of excellence for each of these criteria are given below, but please note these are just examples, and individuals should reference these criteria and provide their own evidence against the criteria, in their applications. It is recognised that applicants for affiliated titles are likely to be substantively employed outside the Higher Education sector, and both the volume and the nature of their contributions, and the evidence for those contributions, will be considered accordingly. Work supporting University courses and students, for example fitness to practise panel work, student welfare and other equivalent contributions, is also eligible for consideration.
For those applying on the basis of clinical course teaching, please note that applicants should make a sizeable contribution to teaching over and above routine teaching on the wards, in outpatients, and similar settings. This will usually mean involvement in a range of different teaching activities/areas (including, often, within longitudinal themes such as communication skills or professionalism), and should involve some contribution to assessment (usually summative assessment) in order to be considered for a title at this level. Applicants will also be expected to be able to evidence ongoing professional development in the area of medical education.
Please note that research student supervision will not usually be considered under the ‘Predominantly teaching’, route, but rather as part of the evidence for those applying under the ‘Predominantly research’ route.

- Successful introduction of innovative methods into own teaching and assessment practices
- Being nominated, shortlisted, or having received a prize for teaching
Criterion 2
- Revision and updating of course content
- Revision of course design ensuring the application appropriate teaching techniques and materials that embed the latest educational ideas and methods, including but not limited to the use of digital technologies
- Revision of formative assessment methods informed by best practice
Criterion 3
- Sustained engagement in CPD activities with demonstrable impact on own practice
- Achievement of qualifications / professional accreditation as relevant (e.g. Fellowship of HEA; Membership/Fellowship of relevant professional body; MEd; PGCHE)
Affiliated Associate Professor – Predominantly Teaching

- Leadership of revision and updating of course content, ensuring it is research-informed
- Leadership in development, revision and updating course design ensuring the application of innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and materials that embed the latest educational ideas and methods including the use of digital technologies.
- Design and review of assessment methods and tools, informed by best practice and in line with research and strategic drivers
- Evidence of successful collaboration with students in curriculum development projects
- Impactful programme and/or subject leadership
- Development and implementation of initiatives to support specific groups of students
Criterion 3
- Delivery of CPD and other forms of professional training to peers
- Achievement of qualifications / professional accreditation as relevant (e.g. Fellowship of HEA; Membership/Fellowship of relevant professional body; MEd; PGCHE)
- External recognition of teaching/subject expertise through invitations to disseminate practices and scholarship externally
- Engagement in scholarly activity which demonstrably enhances subject knowledge and/or curricula beyond the University
- Sustained track record of development of high quality open educational resources which are adopted within and beyond the University
Criterion 4
- Contribution to University initiatives to promote innovation and excellence in teaching, learning and assessment (e.g. in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching and Learning)
- Contribution to Department or Faculty activities which promote diversity, inclusion, widening participation and/or internationalisation
- Participation in strategic initiatives related to the discipline/subject area with other HE and/or non-HE institutions
Affiliated Professor – Predominantly Teaching
Applications for the award of title of Affiliated Professor on the basis of teaching, will be considered with regard to the following criteria:
Delivery of excellent research-informed and intellectually challenging teaching (Criterion1)
Contribution to curriculum development and enhancement (Criterion 2)
Track record of scholarship in the discipline and/or related to the development of good practice in teaching and learning (Criterion 3) Participation in strategic or developmental initiatives (Criterion 4)

- Evidence of providing strategic direction in advancing an inclusive and supportive learning environment, improving student support, pastoral care and overall student experience.

- Evidence of influencing practice in their field of expertise nationally/internationally
- Reputation nationally/internationally as an expert in their field
- Scholarship-driven influence on government / public policy / professional bodies
