Department of Genomic Medicine
We take a broad approach and encourage interests in genomics and the functional biology of genetic disease.
Welcome to the Department of Genomic Medicine.
Founded in 1995, the Department of Genomic Medicine takes a broad approach to medical genetics, integrating genomics, functional biology of human disease, and clinical applications in diagnostics and therapeutics.
Our department works closely with the NHS Department of Clinical Genetics, the East Genomic Laboratory Hub, and the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR).
Research in our department spans monogenic and multifactorial disorders, often in collaboration with Addenbrooke’s Hospital as well as other institutions. Main areas of research include:
- cancer genetics
- developmental disorders
- neurological disease
- X-linked conditions
- renal genetics
- genomic imprinting disorders
- clinical applications of exome/whole-genome sequencing and polygenic scores
Our department is also home to the Stratified Medicine Core Laboratory Next-Generation Sequencing Hub (SMCL NGS Hub), a multi-omics facility dedicated to advancing translational research for academia and industry.
Our department has an international reputation for research excellence. We offer MPhil, MRes, and PhD programmes in partnership with leading institutions such as the University’s Schools of Clinical Medicine and Biological Sciences, the European Bioinformatics Institute, and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
We also have a successful Our PhD programme, which enables students to develop the skills required to become successful independent researchers with strong scientific, practical, and communication abilities.
Our cross-cutting research interacts with nearly all specialties, across all age ranges, addressing disease prevention through to precision medicine.
Stratified Medicine Core Laboratory
Our Stratified Medicine Core Laboratory (SMCL) Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Hub is a research facility specialising in NGS technologies and dedicated to advancing translational research for both academia and industry
We will be happy to assist you with your Next Generation Sequencing project, including nucleic acid extractions, and Olink Services.
