Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine at Cambridge is one of the most prestigious and top ranked in the UK and throughout the world.
Our mission is to translate world class fundamental research into interventions that positively impact health and wellbeing for people everywhere - Professor Duncan Richards, Head of Department of Medicine
Our work extends from biomedical research to the clinic and is linked to all research throughout the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the UK, and the wider international community.
We host 750 staff, students and visitors, more than 80 principal investigators, and more than £150 million worth of active grants.
Interaction with industry is a major focus of our work. Building on the longstanding presence of the GSK Cambridge Clinical Unit, the recent arrival of the Global Research and Corporate Headquarters of AstraZeneca and the growing presence of BioNTech.
Our experts work with NHS clinicians, industry, patients, as well as international research partners in Africa and Asia.
The Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart & Lung Research Institute (VPD-HLRI) is the hub of collaborative research between the University of Cambridge and Royal Papworth Hospital, that brings together population health, laboratory, and clinical researchers.
Our postgraduate programmes include:
- doctoral studies are carried out by science postgraduates, medical students combining clinical training with the PhD, and clinically qualified doctors undertaking scientific training
- PhD in Infection and Immunity: a 4 year programme provides students with the training, skills and expertise to bring novel and innovative approaches to the study of immune and infectious disorders
- PhD in Medicine: a 4 year programme covering the whole spectrum of medical science from basic biology to clinical therapies
- MPhil in Medical Science: a 1 year programme covering the spectrum of medical science from basic biology to clinical therapies. Candidates take a shorter course of research and write a thesis for the master's after one year
