School of Clinical Medicine Doctoral Training Programme

The School of Clinical Medicine Doctoral Training Programme (SCM DTP) provides fully funded studentships for PhD students studying within the School of Clinical Medicine. 

Studentships are funded for 3.5 years and include:

  • a stipend based on the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) minimum stipend rate
  • University course fees
  • an allowance for laboratory consumables and travel
  • access to research training and development opportunities for the SCM DTP student cohort

Doctoral studentships will be available for research projects across the School of Clinical Medicine. The School's Doctoral Training Programme is particularly interested in funding projects in:

  • Data Science for Health
  • Infections and Immunity
  • Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Disease
  • Neurosciences and Mental Health

Eligibility

To be considered for an SCM DTP studentship, you must have been offered a place on a PhD course within an institution in the School of Clinical Medicine. 

SCM DTP studentships are only available for PhD study within the School of Clinical Medicine. They are not available for other postgraduate courses or for study in institutions outside the School.

SCM DTP studentships are not available at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK CI).

Apply for your chosen PhD through the University's postgraduate course directory.

You should also contact the relevant institution to check its application requirements and deadlines. When applying, state that you would like to be considered for SCM DTP funding.

Institutions review all applications and decide which candidates to nominate for SCM DTP funding in February. 

If you are nominated and shortlisted by the SCM DTP committee, you will be invited to a further funding interview in late February or early March. 

Funding offers are usually communicated to successful applicants by mid to late March. 

Funding

SCM DTP studentships provide full funding for 3.5 years. You do not need to make a separate application for additional funding to be considered for an SCM DTP studentship.

However, SCM DTP funding is limited and competitive. We recommend that you also select the option to be considered for the University funding competition when you make your PhD application. 

This means you can be considered for other University funding if you do not receive an SCM DTP studentship. Asking to be considered for other funding will not affect your institution application or your consideration for SCM DTP funding.
