Doctoral Training Programme in Medical Research (DTP-MR)
The DTP-MR provides fully funded studentships for PhD students studying within the School of Clinical Medicine. The studentship provides a stipend based on the UKRI minimum stipend rate as well as an allowance for laboratory consumables and travel plus the university course fees.
The studentship covers study for four years and also gives access to a range of researcher training and development opportunities designed for the DTP-MR student cohort.
The programme is structured with the first 6 months undertaken as two 3-month rotation projects in different laboratories. Students who have a clear research plan can however request to omit the rotations and commence study in their preferred lab.
DTP-MR studentships are potentially available for any research project within the School of Clinical Medicine although the programme is particularly interested in funding projects within the following areas:
- Data Science for Health
- Infections and Immunity
- Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Disease
- Neurosciences and Mental Health
Eligibility
Potential applicants for the DTP-MR will need to have been offered a place on a PhD course within one of the Departments or Institutes of the School of Clinical Medicine. Please note the DTP-MR does not provide studentships for courses other than PhDs nor in Departments other than within the School of Clinical Medicine. Please refer to the University information on funding for information of studentships for other courses and Schools.

Finding a PhD supervisor
Please contact the Department where you wish to study who will be able to give you information on what projects are available with which supervisors within their Departments to whom you can apply to take a PhD.
For more information about departments and supervisors please visit the Departments, institutes and units page.
Please note, DTP-MR places are not available within CRUK CI.
Apply
You should apply directly to the Department where you wish to undertake your PhD. Please contact the Department on how to apply as well as what specific information they require in an application and what deadlines are applicable. When applying please mention that you are interested in being put forward for DTP-MR funding.
Departments review all applications and decide which to nominate for consideration for DTP-MR funding in February. If you are nominated and shortlisted by the DTP-MR committee, you will be called to a further DTP-MR funding interview in late February/early March. Offers of DTP-MR funding are communicated to applicants after the second interview, usually in early March.
All applications to Departments should be made via the online prospectus.
Funding
These are fully funded four-year PhD studentships. This means you do not need to apply for additional funding to be considered. However, due to the competition for the limited DTP-MR funding you are advised to also select on your application consideration for university funding competition. This ensures that you are considered for other funding should you not receive DTP-MR funding. The selection of consideration for other funding does not impact on your department application or consideration for DTP-MR funding.
