Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI)
CSCI is a world-leading centre for stem cell research with a mission to transform human health through a deep understanding of stem cell biology
We stand at the cusp of a transformative era in stem cell research and regenerative medicine. With advancements in technology, a deeper understanding of stem cell biology’s role in disease pathology, and a growing momentum towards translational research, the opportunities before us are truly exciting. - Bertie Göttgens, Director of CSCI
Our scientists study stem cell behaviour and use the findings to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. We bring together scientists from multiple disciplines, operating across many tissues and at multiple scales.
We have around 30 research groups with over 300 biological, clinical and physical scientists operating across a wide range of tissues and at multiple scales.
We have an industry membership program called the Stem Cell Institute Technology and Innovation Forum (SCI-TIF), aiming to unite scientists in industry and academia based on a shared interest in stem cells and their applications within Cambridge and beyond.
Our public involvement and engagement program includes:
- events
- activities
- training
The program aims to:
- raise awareness
- connect with underserved communities
- include patients’ voices in activities
- create an open and engaged research culture
We offer higher education opportunities to train the next generation of clinical and nonclinical stem cell scientists. CSCI's postgraduate program offers: a PhD in Stem Cell Biology, a Master’s degree (MPhil) in Stem Cell Medicine, and a Master’s degree (MPhil) in Biological Science.
Research themes
Our research is focused on three key areas:
- Stem Cell States
- Stem Cells in Disease
- Stem Cells & Therapeutics
Our department
We have 28 research groups with over 300 biological, clinical and physical scientists operating across a wide range of tissues and at multiple scales. This means commonalities and differences in stem cell biology to be explored in a cohesive and interdisciplinary manner.
We also have 38 affiliated researchers across 13 University departments, as well as the Babraham Institute, Wellcome Sanger Institute and MRC-LMB.
