About Patrick Yu Wai Man
I am an academic neuro-ophthalmologist with a major research interest in optic neuropathies, neurogenetics and mitochondrial eye diseases. I am Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the John van Geest Centre for Brain Repair and the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit. In addition to my academic roles, I have joint clinical appointments at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London as an Honorary Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist.
My research group is exploring the disease mechanisms leading to progressive retinal ganglion cell loss in inherited optic neuropathies by using a combination of patient tissues, induced pluripotent stem cells and animal models. I was awarded an NIHR Advanced Fellowship (2021-2026) to evaluate patient outcomes and therapies for this group of disorders.
I am the Director of the Cambridge Clinical Vision Laboratory (CCVL) that was set up as a cross-cutting facility to support advanced therapeutics on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
I was awarded the Ludwig von Sallmann Clinician-Scientist Award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in recognition of my pioneering research on gene replacement therapy for Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath). I have been elected as the next President of the European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER).
